About this piece
Developed by Visual Concepts and published by Interplay, Clay Fighter arrived on the Super Nintendo in North America in 1993, when fighting games were crowding around the success of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. Its answer was to get considerably sillier: physical clay models were photographed and digitized into sprites, giving the cast a stop-motion look that stood apart from both hand-drawn fighters and digitized human actors.Underneath the rubbery presentation is a traditional one-on-one fighter, with special moves, health bars, and opponents who are anything but traditional. Bad Mr. Frosty is a belligerent snowman, Blue Suede Goo turns Elvis impersonation into a fighting style, and Taffy makes his stretchy body part of the act. The humor and handmade visual identity became the series’ calling cards, leading to ClayFighter 2: Judgment Clay on Super Nintendo and later entries on Nintendo 64.This loose US copy is in good condition and is uncommon in our shop. It was inspected, cleaned and tested by hand at Broad Street Exchange in Woodbury, NJ.
